A Thoughtful Cape Cod Home Renovation in Rose Valley, PA
There is something especially rewarding about returning to a home years later and continuing the story you started together.
When these longtime clients first came to us, we worked together on a hardworking mudroom that quickly became one of our favorite spaces. That project was later featured on the cover of Modern Farmhouse magazine, a testament to the thoughtful collaboration and timeless design we created together. It was layered, functional, welcoming, and full of personality. More importantly, it established a foundation of trust and a shared understanding of how they wanted their home to feel. So when they reached back out to begin the next phase of their Rose Valley home, we were thrilled to continue the collaboration.
This time, the focus shifted to the first floor and primary bathroom (not shown) creating spaces that felt more connected, more functional, and better suited to the way their family lives today while still honoring the original Cape Cod architecture that drew them to the home in the first place.
From the beginning, our goal was to create a home that felt effortless. We wanted every room to feel thoughtful and cohesive without losing the warmth and charm that made the home feel special.
Reimagining the First Floor Layout for Modern Living
One of the biggest transformations came through reworking the floor plan. The existing layout had a small kitchen and half of the home felt disconnected and unused. By carefully reimagining the space, we were able to create a huge custom kitchen, carve out a dining room, and create a much stronger connection between each living area. Rather than simply adding a breakfast nook, we thoughtfully expanded the kitchen into what had been the original dining room. This allowed us to create a generous, light-filled kitchen while introducing a new casual dining space just off the kitchen. By strategically adding walls, we were able to define each space with purpose, giving the home a more natural rhythm while maintaining an open, connected feel.
The result feels open and welcoming without sacrificing the intimacy that older homes do so well.
Because the home already had so much architectural character, it was important to us that the updated layout still felt true to the original structure. Every adjustment was made with the intention of improving functionality while preserving the timeless charm of the home.
A Warm and Timeless Kitchen Design
In many of our projects, the kitchen serves as the foundation of the home, and this space was no different. Every detail was thoughtfully considered to create a room that feels both elevated and effortlessly livable.
We designed the space around both beauty and function, prioritizing natural light, warmth, and everyday livability. Huge new windows flood the room with sunlight throughout the day, while custom cabinetry and timeless finishes create a sense of quiet elegance. The huge custom walnut island became an anchor for the entire first floor, adding richness and contrast while also serving as a gathering place for family and friends.
Thoughtful material selections bring layers of character to the kitchen, balancing classic details with a fresh, refined feel. A warm copper faucet adds an unexpected touch of patina and personality, complementing the rich walnut tones throughout the space. Soapstone countertops and an apron-front sink introduce a natural, tactile element with their soft veining and organic beauty, while the quartzite island countertop creates a durable yet elegant centerpiece that ties the entire kitchen together.
Throughout the home, we leaned into materials that would feel timeless rather than trend-driven. Warm wood tones, layered neutrals, natural textures, and soft finishes all work together to create a sense of comfort and ease - a space that feels elevated, but still welcoming and designed for everyday living.
Custom Details That Add Character and Function
One of our favorite moments in the home is the custom walnut reeded bar tucked into the den. It adds both function and character while bringing a slightly moodier, tailored element into the overall design. It feels sophisticated without feeling formal, which was incredibly important throughout the project.
Thoughtful details like this are what make a home feel personal. We wanted each space to have its own identity while still feeling cohesive with the rest of the home.
As the original main family room and everyday gathering space, this den was designed with comfort and connection in mind. It needed to be a place where the family could settle in for game days, spend time together, and enjoy the moments that happen in a well-loved home.
To bring warmth and personality into the space, we layered in a rich green velvet sofa paired with blue check swivel chairs, creating a balance of classic style and relaxed livability. The velvet adds depth and softness, while the swivel chairs offer flexibility - making it easy for the family to gather, move between conversations, and enjoy the room from different angles. These pieces bring a sense of timeless character while still feeling approachable and made for everyday life.
A Bright and Comfortable Living Room Designed for Everyday Life
The living room was another meaningful transformation. Before the renovation, it was a space that rarely saw much use, filled with mismatched furniture and lacking a clear purpose. We saw an opportunity to completely rethink how this end of the home could function. By removing some poorly designed built-ins and adding additional windows next to the fireplace we were able to bring the outdoors in and allow the light to flow. We created a furnishings layout for conversation, and we transformed it into a bright, inviting room the family now uses every day.
Cozy seating, soft textures, and beautiful garden views make it the kind of room you immediately want to settle into at the end of the day. More importantly, it opened up an entire portion of the house that had previously gone underutilized, giving the family another comfortable place to gather, relax, and enjoy time together.
Creating spaces that feel beautiful but also truly livable is always at the center of our work. We wanted this home to support both quiet everyday moments and larger gatherings with family and friends.
Our Full-Service Interior Design Process
What made this project especially rewarding was the level of trust involved. Because this was a full-service project, we were able to guide every detail from space planning and finish selections to furnishings and final styling. Having that level of collaboration allowed us to ensure that each room felt connected to the next while still serving its own unique purpose.
Working closely with our clients from start to finish always creates the strongest results because every decision is made with the bigger picture in mind.
A Home Designed to Feel Collected, Relaxed, and Personal
At the end of every project, our hope is always the same: that the home feels like a true reflection of the people living there.
For this family, that meant creating spaces that are welcoming, relaxed, layered, and designed to evolve alongside them over time. The final result feels elevated yet entirely livable, which is always our favorite balance to strike.
We are so grateful to these clients for inviting us back into their home and trusting us once again with such an important chapter of their story. Projects like this are a reminder that good design is never just about how a home looks. It is about how it supports the people living inside it every single day.
