Project Reveal: Historic Haddonfield Charmer
There is something incredibly special about working on a historic home. The charm, the original details, and the sense of history woven into every room create an incredible foundation for thoughtful design. For this Haddonfield, New Jersey project, our goal was to preserve the soul of the home while reimagining the spaces to better support the everyday rhythms of a young family.
From the earliest design conversations through architectural planning and construction, this project was deeply collaborative. Working closely with the homeowners, architect, and builder allowed us to thoughtfully rethink the layout while honoring the character that made this home so special in the first place.
Reimagining the Layout of a Historic Haddonfield Home
One of the biggest priorities for this renovation was improving the functionality and flow of the home without compromising its original architecture. Older homes often come with compartmentalized layouts that no longer support modern family living, so we focused on creating spaces that felt more open, connected, and practical for everyday life.
A seamless addition at the back of the home not only introduced a new mudroom, powder room, and laundry space, but allowed us to enlarge the kitchen and create an entirely different flow.
These rooms now provide the family with much-needed functionality while blending naturally into the original structure of the house. Architectural details and carefully selected finishes helped ensure the addition felt authentic to the home’s historic character.
Natural light floods the new spaces, creating a bright and welcoming transition between old and new.
A Modern Blue and White Kitchen with Timeless Character
The kitchen quickly became the heart of the home and one of the most transformative spaces in the project. Expanding the footprint allowed us to create a much more functional gathering space for cooking, entertaining, homework, and everyday family life.
At the center of the kitchen is a large island with soft radius corners that bring a sculptural and approachable feel to the room. Generous seating encourages gathering and conversation, which was incredibly important for this young family.
The design palette is a fresh and modern interpretation of classic blue and white kitchen design. Rich blue cabinetry on the island grounds the space, while neutral perimeter cabinetry keeps the room feeling timeless and airy. Warm walnut accents throughout the kitchen add depth and contrast, particularly in the custom bar area featuring walnut shelving and brass details.
One of the standout architectural elements is the custom radius range hood, which softens the overall space and complements the arched cabinetry beautifully. Moroccan-inspired mosaic tile behind the bar introduces texture, pattern, and personality while maintaining the calm, layered aesthetic of the home.
Throughout the kitchen, we focused on blending clean lines with organic textures and subtle curves to create a space that feels elevated yet deeply livable.
Custom Dining Spaces Designed for Gathering
Adjacent to the kitchen, we designed a custom built-in dining space that adds both charm and functionality. Built-in seating creates a cozy and inviting atmosphere while maximizing usable space for everyday family meals and entertaining.
In the formal dining room, we embraced a moodier and more dramatic palette while maintaining cohesion with the rest of the home. Denim blue Moroccan-inspired wallpaper wraps the room in warmth and texture, creating an intimate and layered environment.
The dining room furnishings combine modern silhouettes with rustic antiques, allowing the space to feel collected over time rather than overly designed. A statement woven chandelier adds softness and sculptural interest while complementing the rich wood tones throughout the room.
A Cozy Living Room with Original Built-Ins
The living room was designed to feel relaxed, warm, and timeless. We wanted to highlight the home’s original built-ins and architectural character while creating a space that felt comfortable for everyday family life.
Soft neutral upholstery, layered textiles, warm wood tones, and understated styling all contribute to the cozy atmosphere. We repainted the original built-ins, which became an opportunity to display collected objects, books, and meaningful personal pieces that bring character and authenticity to the space.
Simple linen window treatments soften the room while allowing natural light to filter throughout the space beautifully.
A Custom Music Room Designed for a Music-Loving Family
One of the most personal spaces in the home is the custom music room designed specifically for this music-loving family. This small room was originally a playroom/dropzone and the clients wanted a space where music could become part of their everyday routine, a space for the kids to practice their instruments, hang out with friends or to simply enjoy time together as a family at the end of the day. .
We approached the room with the same layered and collected aesthetic carried throughout the home, balancing comfort with personality. Warm wood tones, cozy seating, soft lighting, and curated styling create an inviting atmosphere that feels both creative and relaxed. To lean into the small space, we painted the ceiling a dark color and brought it down the wall, creating a cozy nook feeling and an added layer of personality. The new space reflects the homeowners’ interests while adding another layer of individuality to the overall design.
Creating rooms that support how our clients truly live is always one of the most rewarding parts of the design process, and this music room feels like such a meaningful extension of the family’s lifestyle and personality.
A Family Home Filled with Personality and Function
What makes this project so special is the balance between historic charm and modern functionality, and a dash of collected details. Every design decision was made with intention, blending timeless materials, thoughtful architectural details, and practical family living into spaces that feel welcoming, layered, and deeply personal.
This Haddonfield home now feels brighter, more functional, and beautifully connected while still honoring the original character that made the home so special from the start.
