A Little Boy's Classic and Cute Bedroom Reveal

I’m so excited to be sharing the reveal of my son, Smith’s bedroom project that we photographed last year - Pre-pandemic if you can believe it! And before that, I was hinting at this project for literally forever. So, this thing has been in the making for a while and it’s finally time for it to go out into the Universe and fulfill its design destiny before he outgrows it and we re-design it. So without further ado, check out how my little guy’s big kid room turned out.

Vintage Boys Bedroom Reveal

Let me just start with saying kids’ rooms are seriously the mooooooosssst fun to decorate! I love being able to mix in all the fun elements that make a kid’s room really come together and show off all their hobbies as they grow (without being theme-y, of course) As clients, kids are also really appreciative to have their space designed just for them and tend to not be too picky. And seeing as it is my child, it affords me extra snuggles, which I’m cool with.

One thing I like to do in all kid’s rooms is to create something that will grow with them. When I started with his nursery before he was born, the first thing I did was paint the walls this blue gray paint for a perfect backdrop and pick out the cute baby animal prints. His crib was a hand-me-down Jenny Lind from his sister and had that great vintage appeal that works for boys or girls.

I added darker window treatments to add contrast, block light and speak to the same color story. I went with roller shades to keep the space feeling light and for easy up and down to prepare for bedtime.

As Smith got older and needed a big-boy bed, I again borrowed from my daughter’s room and repurposed this cute vintage four poster bed that I had originally purchased years ago at a garage sale down the street. I painted it white for her room as she transitioned out of her crib - it was back in the shabby chic days and in white, it looked so pretty. But for a boy’s room, a great blue/green/gray color was a perfect shade and it looks so cool with the plaid rug that anchors the room.

I love how the subtle mix patterns in different shades of blue throughout pair with the graphic contrast of the plaid rug.

The mix of animals throughout the room feels young and fun and as a surprise, I decided to use a cute little stuffed animal head along with the baby animal prints for a little twist on a typical gallery wall.

Layered bedding in blue and white plays to the color palette of the room and is easily swapped with the weather. The room is small, so the bed is pushed off-center to allow for space to play. And speaking of playtime, toy storage is a must in any kid’s room and is hidden throughout the space. I added affordable cubby storage that stores books for easy grabbing before bedtime and woven baskets for toys below.

The room also has a great bay window space which not only gives it a little more floor space but lots and lots of light. An open-armed chair to keep the space feeling open, and a little table create a perfect reading spot. Additional built-in storage within arms reach stores more books and toys. The back of the bookshelf is painted a navy blue to pull the color throughout the space.

I had so much fun bringing this room together. It’s a mix of re-purposed, new, and budget-friendly finds. And although it’s been used and lived in a while, it still feels fresh and fun and will be something that continues to grow and evolve with him.
