The Dutch Door House

When our client moved her family into her childhood Dutch Colonial in Jenkintown, with her father, the vision was both sentimental and forward-looking: honor the character of the home she grew up in while creating a space that felt their own.

We reimagined the back of the house to better support modern family life, significantly enlarging the kitchen and opening it to a newly integrated laundry room and banquette area. By removing barriers between spaces and refining circulation, we transformed the flow completely — creating a kitchen nearly three times its original size and anchoring the home around gathering and connection.

Custom inset cabinetry in a soft neutral introduces timeless structure and generous storage, while layered tones of blue-green and bold plum bring warmth and depth throughout. In the laundry room, a marble checkered floor adds a tailored, heritage-inspired detail that feels both playful and enduring.

Throughout the renovation, the focus remained on creating spaces that feel classic, welcoming, and designed to evolve with the family over time. The Dutch door — thoughtfully replaced and reintroduced — serves as a quiet nod to the home’s history, honoring childhood memories while welcoming a new generation through the same threshold.

The result is a home that feels rooted in legacy yet refreshed for modern living, a thoughtful next chapter for a house filled with history.
